Tikarpada is highly popular amongst connoisseurs of natural beauty for its scenic surroundings and diversity of wildlife. It encloses the mighty Satkosia Gorg where the Mahanadi River plunges into the Eastern Ghats adding to the picturesque beauty of the sanctuary.
The Tikarpada wildlife sanctuary was established to preserve the endangered Gharials. The ecosystem of Mahanadi is perfect for the survival of these animals. The sanctuary encompasses a total area of 795.92 sq. km. It is one of the largest sanctuaries in the state. The river cuts through a considerable distance of 22 kms of the vast collage of variously coloured Sal trees which lends the place a heavenly look.
Besides Gharials, the sight of snakes, crocodiles and fresh water turtles would surely make your day. If lucky, one may get a glimpse of tigers which inhabited the sanctuary in great numbers in the past. Other faunal species include Indian adjutant stroke, rhesus macaques, elephants, leopards, wild cats, spotted deer, pangolins and red jungle fowl. During season, a number of migratory birds can also be found here. Thus, bird watching becomes a favourite pass time for many visitors.
Unlike many other sanctuaries, you will find a lot to do here. White water rafting, fish angling, boating and trekking through the lush forests are interesting activities here. These are a good number of tourist spots near the sanctuary like Satkosia George sanctuary, which is just an hours drive from Tikarpada sanctuary. If you are planning for a family picnic, then you can even opt for Saptasajya- a famous picnic spot. From there you can easily visit the Saptarishi and Raghunath temple.
There is a forest lodge located within the forest area. One can also opt for camping in the forest lodge, fow which an advance permission of the Forest Office is required. Besides this one can choose from budget, heritage and luxury hotels in Tikarpada.
How to Reach:
Tikarpada is 58 kms from Angul and 120 kms from Dhenkanal. One can take private coaches, cabs or drive down to this exotic land of wild.
